The National Medical Commission made face-based Aadhaar attendance mandatory for all medical colleges from May 2025. JEE and NEET are set to use face recognition from 2026.

Faculty absenteeism and ghost faculty listings have been flagged in UGC reports and NMC inspections, particularly in private medical and deemed universities.
The mismatch is the core problem. Face recognition for campus management exists because that problem has resisted every cheaper solution tried so far.

Furthermore, Karnataka announced plans to deploy face recognition attendance across over 52,000 schools covering approximately 525,000 students via a mobile app. The rollout drew formal opposition from a coalition of 31 civil society organisations who wrote to the Chief Minister citing data security risks, particularly the potential for biometric data misuse or breach.
The National Testing Agency announced face recognition for JEE and NEET starting 2026. Real-time photographs at exam centres will be cross-verified against facial recognition software to prevent impersonation. These two exams collectively affect over two million candidates annually.
Moreover, Maharashtra deployed face recognition in college canteens to verify recipients of subsidised meal schemes, ensuring welfare benefits reached the correct students and reducing fraud in distribution.
The NMC mandate does not use standalone biometric face recognition. It uses face-based Aadhaar authentication, meaning every attendance verification routes through UIDAI's infrastructure. This means:
Faculty and staff must consent to Aadhaar-linked biometric authentication as a condition of employment in medical colleges. The legal framework for this consent under the DPDP Act 2023 remains incompletely defined.
The data connects to a national identity infrastructure. The question of what happens to that data, who can access it beyond the college, and how long it is retained has no clear institutional-level answer today.
India's face recognition deployment in education is not comparable to a standalone campus attendance system. It is biometric authentication plugged into a national ID stack. That distinction should be front and centre in any deployment decision.
